Lagos-born and Dubai-based musician Santi (also known as Ozzy B) is one of the many voices of Nigerian afrobeat’s newly rejuvenated sound, which Santi calls “New Africa.” This New Africa sound is atmospheric and beautiful, with a blend of auto-tuned crooning and acoustic instrumentation that’s both upbeat and calming.

Do you miss David Bowie and dig bands like Phantogram? Here’s Öhrn. According to Ja Ja Ja, “Bang Bang” will appear on an EP due late November via her own label, Eagle Brain. Stay tuned for hopefully more of that singing and saxophone.

I found Sikuri while scanning TIU, and I’m glad I found these spacy yet beat-driven tracks. According to Remezcla, Sikuri is a reference to an ensemble form of Andean pan flute music, usually performed in groups so that compositions can span a wider range of sound. You can find more Sikuri via his London label Trax Couture.

According to Bandcamp Daily, Berlin duo Gurr has invented a new sound with its debut album ‘In My Head’: First Wave Gurrlcore. According to the band’s Facebook, that sound is “garagepop…sounds like a trashy 60s girl group meshed with poppy vocals in two voices and a flavor of eeriness dug out from the deep darkness that is the Berlin rocknroll bar’s restroom at 5 am.” It also sounds like a Pavement record that’s actually at peace with itself. And while we wait for the new Real Estate album, Gurr’s breezy guitar work will do the trick.

Balcony and Homicide’s “Memoar ’98” is an old song, released four years ago on the excellentReunion EP released via Grimloc Records. Now we have a new music video for the Indonesian hardcore metal song that sounds like hardcore metal trying to do rap and doing it surprisingly well (we have Homicide to thank for that). According to Rolling Stone Indonesia, the music video is dedicated to Balcony’s late guitarist Rev. “Jojon” Permana, who passed away two years ago.

This music video by Madrid rapper BEJO is, uh, something. I think it involves Magos, but only because the song is called “Mango.” There are six-eyed men and cartoonish parrots watching you. Unknowingly, you silently shake to BEJO’s subtle but strong beat. There are some sheep, I think. And a frying pan. So fresh.

What would Joni Mitchell sound like covering Nick Drake with Bon Iver’s banjo player and percussionist? Whatever that is, Buenos Aires’ Karina Vismara would smoke ’em. She has a voice, and it’s never caught trying to justify boring guitar playing or any old trick we’ve heard a million times. Vismara’s secret weapon is in her writing, for she knows when to move from haunting coffee-shop fingerpicking folkie to I’m Gonna Bang And Wail On My Guitar And Scream Without Raising My Voice And I Will Devour The Pin That You Can Hear Drop When I Play. She’s that good.
